The noise level in an air pump can be relative because what is loud to you might be okay for someone else. However, some air pumps make very little noise and often go unnoticed in an aquarium. Though the noise level may vary depending on the size of the pump and the brand.

Sometimes the larger the pump, the more noise it produces. Again, some brands are louder than others no matter the size of the pump. A noise level of less than 45 dB is best for your creatures and won’t cause any distraction. With this information in mind, we have a list of the quietest air pumps that you may consider for your aquarium.

Top 8 Quietest Air Pumps

Below we have a list of the best air pumps with less noise:

1. Tetra Whisper

Tetra is the quiet pump, rated for a 10-gallon aquarium.  It’s small in size measuring around 3.9 by 2.8 by 5.5 inches and weighing 12 ounces. The dome-like shape makes the pump quiet as it traps most of the noise within and prevents much from escaping. This pump doesn’t hum or buzz a lot.

  • Has a plastic air valve
  • It’s very affordable
  • It has a lifetime warranty

  • It lacks tubing so you have to buy it separately.

2. Fluval Q1

Fluval is a bit noisier than Whisper, though it's rated for large tanks 50-160 gallons. The pump measures 3.2 x 7.8 x 6.4 inches and uses 3.4 psi. The low noise is a result of some factors.  One is that the pump has a double-wall design and is incorporated inside. Again, the equipment features a baffle chamber that helps to suppress the noise.

  • It’s a power pump
  • It has low noise
  • Used for several purposes

  • Some of its parts aren’t durable

3. Eheim Air Pump

This pump is quiet, powerful, and has the best design. The Eheim brand has a good reputation for producing the best aquarium products. This product features a quality diffuser and a check valve. On the downside it's a plug-in pump thus lacks backup abilities. Again, the product is very pricey.

  • It’s a very quiet pump
  • Comes with a great diffuser

  • It's very expensive
  • It has a plug-in option

4. Mylivell Pump

This pump has a unique design with a suction cup on the back for attachment. It’s also one of the quietest pumps on the market. The reason behind it being quiet is the special materials used. The product applies new technology by using a piezoelectric ceramic plate that forms wind currents thus reducing noise.

This pump consumes less power of 3.5W and a flow rate of 24l/h. It's ideal for small to medium tanks up to 40 gallons. It lacks a motor thus becomes very quiet to a level of 33dB.  This noise level is way below the human conversations sound of 60dB.

  • It’s quiet
  • Lightweight and compact
  • Best airflow
  • Durable due to the piezo material

  • Lacks check valve
  • The suction cup may lose strength

5. Hygger Pump

This pump is ideal for small to medium tanks in any water environment either salty or fresh. It produces less noise though you can feel the vibration. However, it has the highest volume so one may not mind the vibration. The product has a dark external case that houses a container where there is a 12V air conditioning engine. This design contributes to less noise in the pump.

The pump also has shockproof rubber feet. Even with vibrations, it causes less noise of 35dB. Again, the pump has two outlets that can serve two aquariums simultaneously. Therefore, it's a reliable pump with the best output.

  • Pumps large volume of air
  • Quiet with regards to air volume
  • It’s quiet as compared to other models

  • It’s not durable

6. Uniclife Aquarium Air Pump

This pump is compact and blends with the surroundings. It's suitable for both marine and freshwater aquariums. The product has an adjustable flow rate and can work in a 20-100 gallon tank. The pump has the lowest noise level of 25dB when on the lowest flow rate.

It features many accessories like two return valves, 2M airline, two stones, and two connectors. You also get a free replacement if there is a problem in 18 months.

  • Dual outlets
  • Adjustable flow rate
  • Quiet air pump
  • Has many accessories

  • Lacks many bubbles even with an air stone
  • It's weak, especially in high settings

7. Tetra Whispers for Deep Tanks

The pump is powerful and very popular with the Tetra company. It's dome-shaped with rubber feet for attachment to the tank. This design helps absorb vibrations from the air pump, producing less noise. It's also powerful to operate in deep tanks up to 8 feet.

Again, the pump can function with power long decorator air stones or many stones at once. It can even activate protein skimmers for salty aquariums.  However, this pump has a weakness. After using it for an extended period, it becomes noisier.

  • Lifetime limited warranty
  • Powerful vibration
  • Creates underwater bubbles
  • It has different sizes

  • Tends to make noise with time

8. Supreme Aqua-Mag Air Pump

This pump is small and features two outlets and large air stones. It has 2.0 psi and consumes 3.5 watts of electricity. You can still control the airflow using a T-tube and several air stones. It generates little noise of around 31dB thus a convenient pump to use. You can use the pump in either freshwater or salty aquariums either in-line or submerged.

  • It has a friendly price
  • It's durable
  • Makes less noise
  • Has a pre-filter to clean out debris

  • It's not ideal for larger aquariums

A water pump is very necessary for aeration and water circulation. From the information above, I hope it helps you find a quiet air pump that will serve your aquarium needs. Again, it’s best if you consider power consumption and air pump power when choosing the product. Noise level alone can't guide you in choosing the best pump. Some pumps may be quiet but aren't efficient thus not worth an investment.
